What can WR&E do to help you?

Caring for orphaned and injured wildlife at the WR&E Wildlife Center

Our Wildlife Rehab and Education Wildlife Center gives you a central location that is staffed by knowledgeable volunteers and is open 7 days a week. The Wildlife Center can be reached by phone at  713-861-WILD. We try to constantly monitor the phone, but sometimes we are caught with our hands full, so please leave a message.  We will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Advice and guidance

It is best to speak to someone with Wildlife Rehab and Education before intervention since they often can provide solutions that don’t require separating babies and their mother or trapping and relocation. Once it is determined that the wildlife requires assistance, the animal can be brought to the Wildlife Rehab and Education Wildlife Center at 7007 Katy Road, Houston, TX 77024 or if the center is closed, to the Houston SPCA general intake at 900 Portway Drive, Houston, TX  77024. For directions,  Click here for a printer friendly map. Click here for written driving directions.

Often volunteers are at the Wildlife Center before and after hours, so if you need assistance before or after posted hours, please call ahead.

In addition to putting the Wildlife Center's phone number 713-861-WILD in your cell phone or speed dial, also add 713-643-WILD for a partial list of  WR&E Wildlife Rehabilitators and their phone numbers in Houston and surrounding counties.

Help with problem wildlife

Raccoons in the attic or opossums under the deck? First, try  the information in Wildlife FAQ's  section. If that doesn't answer your questions, the volunteers at the Wildlife Center and our individual rehabilitators are available to help with individual problems.

Volunteers are available to give educational programs

WR&E has three missions and like a stool, we can't fulfill our overall mission of caring for the needs of native Texas Wildlife without a balance of all three. The first is the most obvious - physically caring for injured and orphaned wildlife that is entrusted to our care and returning them to the wild in such a way and condition that survival is maximized. The second is our Oiled Wildlife Response Team that can intervene during an environmental crisis to minimize the impact to native wildlife.

The third mission of WR&E is public education. We need to get our message of peaceful co-existence; respect for ourselves, each other and our environment; responsible stewardship of our environment and wildlife ecosystems; how to tell if an animal requires intervention or should be left alone, how to reunite moms with their babies and how to deal with "nuisance" animals without resorting to live-trapping and relocation. Without education we have no hopes of stemming the tide of habitat destruction, escalation of conflicts between wildlife and people and the waves and waves of orphans that are found two to three days after mom has been trapped and relocated or the babies that are kidnapped by well meaning people who want to help but don't know how. of our goals is the education of the general public about peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife.

Our trained speakers and Education Ambassadors are available at the Wildlife Center to provide educational programs. We have an educational tool named the "Peaceful Coexistence" house at the Wildlife Center that simulates several solutions to common ways wildlife gain access to buildings. Click here to learn more about the "Peaceful Coexistence" house. The Wildlife Center can accommodate many more programs per week because WR&E speakers, the Education Ambassadors and all of the support equipment is already in-house and set-up. In addition, the "Peaceful Coexistence" house is available as an important teaching tool. There is no set program fee, for more information or schedule a program, contact Sharon Schmalz.

Our trained speakers and Education Ambassadors are also available to provide educational programs at other locations as well. Reservations for off-site programs are limited by the scheduling of the Education Ambassadors and speakers that are available for different regions.  Again, there is no set program cost, contact Sharon Schmalz, Executive Director of WR&E.
